The best of Alps Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour

Where you choose the date and set the pace
Start/finish in Milan - Italy

Tour Information

The best of the Alps is a fantastic motorcycle tour that includes four of the most beautiful Alpine regions: Italian Dolomites, Slovenian Alps, Austrian Tyrol and Swiss Alps.

You’ll ride some of the most exhilarating and challenging mountain roads and passes, visit some of the best known tourist attractions and pass through some of the most famous Alpine destinations.

Your motorcycle holiday starts in Milan and takes you to Switzerland and the small mountain resort of Lauterbrunnen. The town lies in a narrow alpine valley squeezed in between the towering mountain peaks of Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch. Your hotel is of three star quality, with en-suite rooms, safe motorcycle park, drying facilities and its own restaurant.

Lauterbrunnen is a popular tourist village close to many shops and restaurants and also to the rail station which makes it the ideal starting point for either going to Interlaken or joining one of the numerous Alpine train journeys.

While here we recommend that you spend some time visiting the alpine garden on the Schynige Pllate, the summit of the Heimwehfluh and the Top of Europe / Jungfrau, the famous ski resorts of Wengen or Murren and the spectacular Trummelbach waterfalls. Any of these tourist attractions can be reached by walking, cable car or funicular railway.

If you fancy biking you have the choice of riding to the nearby ski resort of Grindewald, taking a narrow mountain road via the spiral tunnel to the small village of Isenfluh or going on a circular trip around the majestic Alpine lakes of Thunersee and Brienzersee.

From Switzerland you’ll move on to your first Austrian destination. Your four star hotel is located in a picturesque mountain valley surrounded by flowery meadows and pine forest and has comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities, safe parking, swimming pool, steam room and sauna, bar and it’s own excellent restaurant.

From here the day excursions may include rides to the Arlberg Pass (nice souvenir shop), Silveretta Pass (apple strudel to die for), Stelvio Pass (great pizza), Piller Pass (mouth watering schnitzel in visitor centre restaurant), Ressia Pass (submerged church – unique tourist attraction), Weissseespitze Glacier (stunning mountain views) and the charming fortified medieval town of Glorenza (no better place anywhere else in the World for ice cream).

Your tour continues over the scenic mountain passes of Gerlos (fantastic coffee, pretzel and viewing point from the tent café) and Krimml (pizza or spaghetti at Krimml waterfalls) to your second destination in Austria. Here you’ll base yourself for the next two nights in a four star biker friendly hotel surrounded by panoramic views of the snow capped mountain peaks. The day excursion may include a ride to the “Eagle’s Nest”, Hitler’s mountain-top hideaway that was built for him for his fiftieth birthday. You might also opt to take a gentle ride and visit the famous ski resort of Kaprun or the beautiful lake side mountain resort of Zell am See or choose to take a ride over the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Pass (the best pancakes – Franz Jozef glacier restaurant).

From here you move on to your next Alpine destination – Slovenia. It is one of the smallest Alpine countries but often referred to as the ‘hidden gem of Eastern Europe’.
The most famous landmarks in Slovenia are Lake Bled (please try traditional vanilla slice cake) with its church on the Island with the Triglav peaks just behind it and its famous castle on the hillside over looking the lake and town. Another little known region but just as beautiful if not even more so is Lake Bohinj which offers some of the most beautiful mountain scenery. During your stay here you might opt to go on a popular ride out that follows the twisty roads through the Triglav National Park, including the famous Vrsic Mountain pass, via beautiful ski resorts of Bovec and Kranjska Gora or park your bike and relax.

The final leg of this fantastic tour takes you to the Italian Dolomites. This is an unspoiled region of ragged peaks, crystal clear lakes, vast forests, green pastures and traditional alpine villages. Here you’ll stay for two nights in a four star hotel that has an indoor swimming pool, wellness centre, safe parking and its own restaurant.

From here you’ll be able to explore the region by visiting one of the most glamorous Italian ski resorts – Cortina d’Ampezzo (fantastic selection of cafés) and Arraba (the best hot chocolate), and the historic towns of Bolzano (resting place of Otzi the iceman) and Bruneck (great lunch stop).
Weather permitting you’ll have an opportunity to ride some of the most spectacular mountain passes in the Italian Alps including Passo di Gardena, Passo di Sella, Passo Pardoi, Passo di Compolongo, Passo di Castalunga and of course Passo dello Stelvio.

As all good times must end at some point, this glorious tour does as well. However we hope that you’ll have many fond memories and hundreds of fantastic photos to help you to reminisce over the long winter nights and start planning your next great biking adventure.
